Eating Globally in New York

New York City’s restaurant scene is a foodie’s ultimate dream. The island of Manhattan houses more restaurants than any person could possibly explore in an entire lifetime, while the array of cultures that make the city a veritable melting pot offer a smörgåsbord of the world’s best global cuisine all within the 22.8 miles of Manhattan. From fast-casual offerings to expensive Italian eateries, there is no shortage of options for every price point and craving for visitors and locals to indulge. We’ve created another go-to round up of some of the city’s best bets for global eats, from some of the city’s tried and true venues to a few new kids in the neighborhood:

Best Mediterranean

City Kitchen, which recently celebrated its third year of business, brings all of the city’s most coveted concepts to the heart of the city. Located at the Row NYC in Times Square, this food hall has become a favorite to cure any craving imaginable. Housed in City Kitchen is ilili Box, the brain child of chef Philippe Massoud. ilili Box has become a staple for providing delicious and healthy Lebanese street food in a fast casual, to-go setting. Their sumac-seasoned pulled chicken sandwich with Persian cucumbers and garlic whip has been touted as the “stuff of dreams” by joonbug.com and their brussels sprouts with fig puree, grapes, and mint were literally titled the “Best Brussels Sprouts Ever” by the Huffington Post.

Best Neapolitan

Neapolitan cuisine has ancient historical roots that date back to the Greco-Roman period with rustic flavors from simple yet flavorful pastas, vegetables, cheese, and seafood. Today, the cuisine’s signature pizzas have become renowned for their light and crispy crusts and delicious flavor combinations. These slices of heaven are definitely not your standard, soggy, delivery pizzas, and District M at the Row NYC offers an assortment of some of the city’s best hand-stretched pizzas, topped with unique and crave-worthy combinations like pepperoni, fresh basil and white truffle oil–or melted leek, roasted mushrooms and Fontina cheese. Enjoy the pizzas alongside one of District M’s specialty cocktails or craft beers.

Best Korean

We were originally tipped off about Cote, a Michelin star Korean BBQ spot in the Flatiron District, by New York local and event extraordinare, Sebastian Norena, who named the carnivore’s paradise as his go to-spot in our Live Like A Local. According to Cote’s official website, “The carnivorous vision of proprietor Simon Kim, COTE pairs the hallmarks of a classic American Steakhouse—an obsession with the highest quality USDA Prime beef, an impeccable 600+ label wine list, and a suite of classic-but-creative cocktails—with the convivial, interactive dining experience of Korean Barbecue. Each table at COTE comes equipped with a smokeless grill, ensuring that every morsel of steak from our in-house dry aging room is as hot, fresh, and caramelized as the first bite.”

Best Greek

As if we didn’t need any more reason to love the fresh flavors of Greek cuisine, the Mediterranean Diet has emerged as one of the top diets for healthy living, giving us the chance to indulge in a guilt-free night out. New York City offers countless amazing Greek options from food trucks featuring souvlaki to high-end restaurants featuring fresh seafood displays and sky-high prices. Though there are always new places popping up, we always find ourselves craving the consistently amazing offerings and atmosphere at <a Avra Estiatorio. The restaurant is famous for its fish display offering daily Mediterranean specialities such a Barbounia, Lithrini, and Fagri. Though every dish at Avra is impeccable, their simple grilled Portuguese octopus with vidalia onions, capers, and red wine vinegar is a must-order and the perfect way to begin your foray into the world of Greek flavors.
