WARMING WINTER COCKTAILS

Our Favorite Cocktails to Celebrate the Season

Last month, we shared some of our favorite fall dishes available throughout the city. As the holidays grow nearer and the temperatures fall lower, we decided to put together a list of the adult variety in celebration of the festive season. Here are some of the city’s best libations to keep you warm during the chilly winter months:

Screen Door Slam at Stay Gold

If you’re seeking a casual atmosphere to duck into from the cold, Stay Gold is an excellent option. Located in the Kips Bay/Gramercy area, this joint offers handcrafted cocktails, juicy burgers, and high-end service in a neighborhood bar feel. The team behind this venture is the same group that opened the highly successful The Up & Up in Greenwich Village, and they bring the same quaint design sensibility and appreciation for fresh ingredients and quality offerings to their newest locale. Perfect for the cold, we recommend the Screen Door Slam, a warming combination of Maker’s Mark bourbon, aperol, vanilla, honey, and absinthe.

Smoking Old Fashioned at Fine & Rare

This venue is the complete opposite of casual, with Chesterfield sofas, Art Deco decor, and an $80 black caviar martini and $15,000 bottle of scotch on the menu. Fine & Rare was designed to harken back to Old New York by Tommy Tardie of the renowned Flatiron Room. At Fine & Rare, the emphasis is on retro glam, complete with live jazz acts and an oversize fireplace. While warming up by the fire, order one of their famous smoke old-fashioneds. The updated classic cocktail comes in your choice of scotch or rye and is then smoked with either hickory, maple, bourbon oak, or pecan. The rye variety comes with Knob Creek Rye, Angostura bitters, demerara, orange oil, while scotch lovers will find their cocktail made with Glenfiddich 14, maple, pear, maitake mushroom, and bitters.

Compass Rose at BANZARBAR

Located upstairs at Freeman’s restaurant, this tiny cocktail bar (it only seats twenty) is literally a hidden gem, which we think makes it more fun. To access the bar, the Maitre'D of Freemans Restaurant (located at the end of Freemans Alley off of Rivington Street), will escort you upstairs to the second floor to Banzarbar, where you’ll find an antarctic expedition inspired haven. Everyone knows that cognac is a heavy and rich drink, so we think it’s the perfect liquor to enjoy in the winter. Try out Banzarbar’s Compass Rose, made of cognac, sauternes, mango, gentian, and benedictine.

Gentleman’s Club at District M

With so many options around the city, we’ve added in District M located onsite at Row NYC so you don’t have to step out and brave the winter frost. Chicer than a standard hotel bar, District M comes alive in the evening hours featuring a commissioned digital art gallery by paparazzo extraordinaire, Ron Galella and live music Thursday-Saturday nights. Included on their specialty cocktail list is the Gentleman’s Club, a cocktail made of McKenzie Rye, contratto rosso, cherry and angostura bitters and black cherry.
Onsite at the Row NYC: 700 8th Ave New York, NY 10036
