Spring’s Biggest Broadway Openings

Get Ready to Sing and Dance on The Great White Way

The Empire State Building. The Statue of Liberty. The bright lights of Broadway - These are just some of the iconic entities synonymous with the Big Apple. While we love the views from the top, there is nothing that we love more than dinner and a show, and no one brings the best in music, talent, and production like Broadway in Manhattan. Whether you love classic plays, uplifting musicals, or comedic gold, New York’s theaters have everything on offer. And one of the best aspects of the city’s theater scene is that there’s always something new, with each season bringing new plays, fresh from workshops and ready to entertain the masses.

Here are some of our can’t-miss shows opening throughout the coming months.

AIN'T TOO PROUD—THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS

One of the season’s most highly anticipated offerings, Ain’t Too Proud, at the Imperial Theater, brings the timeless music of The Temptations to the bright lights of Broadway. The Rock & Role Hall of Fame Honorees, whose music remains some of the biggest ever to come out of Motown, came from the streets of Detroit to accomplish forty-two Top Ten Hits and fourteen number one songs. But their story is bigger than just their music, and their journey makes for an electrifying and fascinating tale. The show, which has already broken records at Berkeley Rep and The Kennedy Center, explores the friendships and betrayal among the Motown crooners, set against the backdrop of The Civil Rights Movement. Get ready to cry, laugh, and dance along to the group’s most treasured hits, including “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” and more.

OKLAHOMA!

The beloved musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein will return to Broadway for its fifth revival at the Circle in the Square Theatre on March 19, 2019. The story of a brash cowboy who competes for the attention of a stunning woman combines old-fashioned romance, nostalgic Americana, and some of Broadway’s most famous songs. However, this revival is a reimagining of the classic tale, with critics hailing the “ reorchestrated and reimagined” version as a darker, psychological production that “tells a story of a community circling its wagons against an outsider, and the violence of the frontier that shaped America.” For this new take on the beloved classic, be sure to book your tickets fast because the show has a limited engagement that only runs through September 1st.

KISS ME, KATE

Head over to the legendary Studio 54 to watch this musical retelling of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. With opening night slated for March 14th, the comedic musical was the first ever winner of the Tony awards for Best Musical in 1949 and has delighted audiences since with its humor and soundtrack of songs. The Roundabout Theater Company’s latest production stars Kelli O'Hara, and marks her return to the Roundabout Theatre Company, following her Tony-nominated performance in the 2006 revival of The Pajama Game and a 2016 sold-out benefit concert reading of Kiss Me, Kate.

BEETLEJUICE

For something a little less classically Broadway, The Winter Garden Theater is the perfect spot for those who love their entertainment slightly twisted. Hailed as “the comedic escape Broadway needs right now” by IHeart Radio, this show is slightly rude, a little raunchy, and as uniquely dark as Mr. Tim Burton himself. Follow the tale of a family as they move into a new house that’s already inhabited by some friendly ghosts, including the zany Beetlejuice. Predictably, exorcisms, laughs, music, and pandemonium ensue. Get ready, because in the words of Beetlejuice, “It's showtime!”
